About Gavin Bond
One of the few photographers allowed access to the secretive realm of backstage fashion in the early 1990s was British photographer Gavin Bond. His distinctive understanding of the elite high fashion industry led him to contribute to magazines like Vanity Fair, Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, and Rolling Stone. Bond is now working as an entertainment photographer, documenting the marketing and publicity campaigns for all the major film studios across the world.

“Gavin Bond: Being There” explores the photographer‘s archive and features a wide range of infamous fashion “moments.” During lockdown 2020, Bond rediscovered this vast collection of pictures; they transported him back to his days as a teenage fashion student at the elite Central Saint Martins. Along with renowned former students John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Hussein Chalayan, Giles Deacon, and legendary stylist Katie Grand, Bond enrolled at CSM in 1988. Bond attended London Fashion Week as a fashion student and had unrestricted access to the crazy world of backstage fashion events, where he dove in with his camera.
To document the performance backstage, Bond maintained a straightforward technique, shooting swiftly and covertly while relying solely on ambient light. The models walked down the runway wearing Gucci and Galliano, Lagerfeld and Lacroix, Valentino and Versace, and so on, and the shallow depth of focus worked well to capture what was happening in front of him, whether it was a brief glimpse of the designer or a flurry of clothes. He constrained his exposure options, altering only the aperture in accordance with the distance, in order to work quickly. He remembers how every shot had to be carefully thought out because each roll of film only had 12 frames.
A special “grid” of 49 gelatin silver prints from Hamiltons’ exhibition is set up to evoke the experience of “being there” backstage. Together with this outstanding artwork, a number of big scale, editioned, gelatin silver prints will be displayed for the first time in Hamilton’s Gallery at the London Fashion Week during the new exhibition by Gavin Bond.
